Choosing a babysitter is always a daunting task. How do you know if a person is safe? Reliable? What do you need to know, as a parent, and what information is important for your sitter to have on hand?
Trying to find a responsible and reliable babysitter can sometimes feel like attempting to locate the proverbial needle in a haystack. Sure, there may be a lot of children who are anxious to start babysitting and making a little extra money, but are they really ready for this kind of responsibility? Not only can it be frightening to relinquish the care of your precious angel over to a stranger, but it’s all the more difficult to leave your child alone with another who is little more than a child, themselves. For this reason, ensure that your babysitter is a minimum of 14 years of age; while there are exceptions to every rule, most children are not responsible, nor are they emotionally ready to take on the responsibility of watching another child. In fact, a good rule of thumb is that, the younger your child, the older your babysitter should be. Continue reading »

Before you slap on a plastic smile, do some deep thinking on the whole picture when it comes to cosmetic surgery and its risks.
It’s in the news, on television, movies and just about everywhere you look. A pretty face, a slender frame, and sizeable, perky breasts are society’s general prerequisites for a “beautiful woman,” and people are increasingly more willing to succumb to these diluted perceptions each year.
But the purses and bank accounts of women are not the only ones being spilled out for a fresh new look…. More and more men are considering and even going through with cosmetic surgery to fit the trim and youthful appearance desired by so many. Male pectoral implants, calf implants, Rhinoplasty, facelifts, eyelifts and tummy tucks are just a few of the popular procedures in which males are recently partaking. If it’s good enough for celebrities such as Burt Reynolds, Elton John and Michael Jackson, who have undergone cosmetic surgery, all the more reason for other males to consider it. Continue reading »

Traditionally, a baby shower is held for the Mother. It’s a time for her and her friends to enjoy the blessed event that’s about to happen. She will bring a new life into this world. A close friend is usually the one to throw the party. Gifts will be exchanged, games will be played and advice is sure to be given.
Having a co-ed baby shower is not quite common yet but it is certainly getting there. A baby shower doesn’t have to be just for the Mother anymore, it can be both for the Mother and the Father. The Father of this unborn child should certainly be included in the celebration.
Nothing really changes, except for now there will be men present at the party. The same original games can be played such as, “How Fast Can You Dress That BABY” and “Baby Scramble.” When you are planning the baby shower activities, you will want to keep the men in mind so you don’t have games that are for women only. However, you may want to go a different route when it comes to gifts. Continue reading »

Every parent-to-be eagerly awaits the birth of a baby. At that time it is very rare for a new parent to worry about a life threatening illness that may afflict their baby in the distant future. However many parents now do consider saving and storing cord blood as a precaution. The decision a bout this safeguard against any future medical emergency has to be taken in advance as certain preparations are necessary.
Cord blood is rich source of stem cells which are the precursors to the various blood cells and other cells of the body. These stem cells can be transplanted just like bone marrow is transplanted. The procedure can give a new lease of life to a person suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, thalassemia or several immune system related genetic disorders. The stem cells harvested from the cord blood of a new born baby can be stored in a cord blood bank and used for the baby or members of his family if they ever suffer from any of these life threatening diseases. The stems cells can also be used to save the life of an unrelated person if the cells match. Continue reading »

In the time that it takes to carry a baby to term, many unforeseen events can unfold, including the death of a close family member or friend. Sadly, there is not much literature on the topic. I know about this first-hand. When I was four months pregnant with my first child, my older brother died as the result of injuries sustained in a tragic fall. I searched for information on grief and pregnancy, but all that I seemed to come across were articles on miscarriage. Because of my difficult struggle for information, I wish to share with you what I learned and experienced in my journey in hopes that you will be able to take comfort in the fact that somebody “gets” it and, hopefully, find a little guidance in my words.

Being trusted to be “home alone” is an exciting time for your child. However, there are six important steps that you need to take to ensure he is prepared for the responsibility.
Step #1: Teach your child to call you, a neighbor or relative when he enters your empty home. Remote supervision is a critical part of parenting a child who is home alone. Your child will feel more secure knowing an adult is on “alert” while he is alone, and you will be less anxious knowing your child’s whereabouts. A nice bonus to monitored security systems is that they often provide a notification service when your child enters the home and turns off the system. This way you don’t have to worry about missed messages or forgetful children. If you use this service, make sure to instruct your child to rearm the system once he is inside the home. And once you know your child is home, you can still call him to hear about his day and reassure him that you know he is home. Continue reading »

A birth certificate is a vital piece of information. It is used to identify individuals in many different scenarios. Having an official copy of your birth certificate is essential.
The parents of each child receive an official copy of his or her birth certificate shortly after the child is born. However, due to circumstances quite often beyond control, birth certificates are misplaced, lost, or even destroyed. Fortunately, acquiring a birth certificate is no longer the difficult and tedious task that it once was.

A hand with a will of its own. In the cult film Dr StrangeLove, staring Peter Sellers, we are introduced to a character whose hand strangles its owner. This situation is a reality for some people.
This condition is known as Anarchic Hand. It is a neurological condition whereby a person appears to have no control over one of their arms. A person realises the hand is theirs but is frustrated by an inability to dictate its behavior.
Recorded incidences of Anarchic hand:
- Della Sala et al 1994 : A women at dinner finds that her left hand takes some fish bones from a finished meal and stuffs them in her mouth. Later it grabs the ice cream her brother is licking. Her right hand intervenes, admonishes her left hand and the ice cream falls to the floor. The woman is irritated with her left hand. Apologises greatly and says it has a will of its own.

There has been a lot of media focus on surgical weight loss in recent years. In part this is due to celebrity stories such as that of Carnie Wilson. However surgical weight loss is not something to be taken lightly. The procedures can have prolonged effects and require sacrifice and life style change just as any weight loss program. These procedures are not quick fixes.
Gastric Bypass, such as Carnie Wilson had, requires that the person make a complete life style change. One must control their portions continually after the procedure because the stomach has been reduced in size. Over eating often leads to nausea, sweating, and vomiting. Therefore this procedure is not for people who do not have the will power to diet and exercise. Rather the procedure is for the person who diets and exercises correctly but can not lose the weight. Also the procedure is not to be used by those who are slightly overweight. One should be at least 100 lbs overweight before considering this procedure in which the stomach is reduced to a small pouch. Continue reading »
