Nolvadex is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, an anti-estrogen receptor in breast fibrous tissue. It is indicated in the standard anti-estrogen treatment for hormone-positive breast cancer at the early stage. In addition, aromatase inhibitors are indicated to stop the production of estrogen in post-menopausal period in women. Certain breast cancer cells need estrogen to develop. Estrogen activates the estrogen receptor in these breast cancer cells. Nolvadex helps to bind them to the estrogen receptor without activating. Then estrogen is prevented from binding to its receptor. Thus breast cancer cell development is blocked.
Nolvadex is applied in the treatment of advanced estrogen receptor positive breast cancer in women in post-menopausal period as well. This medication being the most common hormone remedy helps in cases of male breast cancer. It is also confirmed to be effective for prevention of breast cancer in patients with high risk of cancer developing.
