Stress and anxiety have no doubt always been problems, but for many workers and citizens today stress levels have never been higher. Stress and anxiety are far more than mere annoyances, and in fact these problems can have a serious impact on not only our mental health but our physical health as well. Many serious medical conditions, including such killers as heart disease, can be exacerbated by high levels of stress.
The reasons for stress and anxiety in our lives are myriad, ranging from perfectly reasonable concerns, such as a lack of job security or the piling up of unpaid bills, to matters others may find trivial. No matter what the reasons for high stress levels, however, the impact is very real, and it is important for those suffering from stress to deal with the problem head on.

For a lot of people, this time of year can be one of the most stressful times around. Dealing with the shopping crowds, family members, well meaning friends, and even that jolly old St. Nick at the mall is enough to drive the sanest person to consider the loony bin. If you don’t want to check yourself into a mental hospital for the duration of the holiday season, here are a few sure fire ways to take the stress levels down a notch.
Tip # 1: Go Shopping Online
One of my best friends absolutely loves to shop. Even during this time of year. She loves the thrill of finding a great deal, and getting her hands on it, before anyone else does. Yes, to my friend this time of year provides her with both the thrill of the hunt, and the sweet taste of victory. Continue reading »

We all get stressed occasionally, but some of us manage to deal with it better than others. It can occur for lots of different reasons – common triggers include work pressures, relationships, family problems and financial reasons. Sadly, if it isn’t dealt with it can have serious effects on our physical, mental and emotional health, as well as lead to other conditions such as high blood pressure, peptic ulcers and depression.
Although the situation looks simple to healthy individuals, often stress sufferers are the last to realise how unwell and run-down they’re feeling, and that there’s a need to make changes. Some of the warning signs and symptoms include: Continue reading »

Water
Water calms you down. The sound of running water calms you down even more. If you have the money and the space, have a waterfall installed in your garden. Make sure the water is recycled. When your blood pressure is up and your eyebrows down, get a comfortable chair and sit near the pond, watch the fish chase each other’s tails and practice deep breathing for ten minutes. Meditate. Feel the stress drain away. Maybe you’ll even fall asleep.
On a cheaper scale, make a garden pond and fill it with water lilies or lotus plants and gold fish or koi. If you live in an apartment, use large and deep pots, put in some fish and water plants, and put them in a sunny, airy room. Buy a comfortable hammock. Hang it under the trees. Put chimes on branches and listen to them tinkle. Another stress buster. Continue reading »

It’s that time of year again. Celebratory dinners, chilly weather and holiday parties bring people together. Families and friends will huddle indoors around the fireplace and share more than just memories of holidays past. Sneezes, coughs and airborne viruses will mingle with cheerful banter. It’s a recipe for immuno-disaster! What’s a healthy family supposed to do, postpone Thanksgiving? Cancel Christmas? If you’d rather enjoy a turkey dinner while others sip chicken soup, combine these five ingredients with your daily routine.
1. Diet
To build a strong immune system in children, begin a healthy diet of breast milk from birth. As children grow and begin to eat solid foods, the recipe for a healthy diet becomes similar to that of an adult. When planning family meals, keep in mind vegetables and fruits contain the vitamins and minerals that help strengthen the immune system, but grains are also important. A multi-vitamin can fill in the gaps where diet lacks, extra doses of vitamin C and zinc help, and drinking water hydrates and cleanses the body. Continue reading »

Society defined women’s roles as mother, wife and homemaker. These roles are evolving, probably at a pace faster than the world has ever seen. Changes in their roles are a major source of stress for women all over the world. A woman’s body also goes through major changes during puberty, child bearing, and menopause. This is the other major source of stress for women
Playing Superwoman
Many women now combine having a job and having a family, taking on the roles of mother, wife, homemaker, and provider while their partners focus on their role as providers. In this situation, the drive to be Superwoman is the principal source of stress for millions of working women. Continue reading »

The best stress coping program is the one tailored for you, the kind of stress you have to deal with and the sources of that stress. Think about it, write down your observations and use them to draw up a stress management plan.
Change You!
You may find that you are a source of stress in your life. For instance, you may want your home to be spotless and spend hours cleaning until you’re exhausted and on edge. You are always angry and you take it out on your spouse and kids. You have to modify your behavior or this scenario will continue day after day, damaging your relations with family members and leaving you unhappy and frustrated. Continue reading »

Understand the Problem
The first step to solving a problem is to understand the problem. We have to understand stress if we want to cope with it. Understand stress and you’re on your way to achieving and maintaining that inner balance that we all need to live a full and happy life.
Stress is part of life. You can’t escape it. Your neighbor and his brother can’t escape it. It comes from people interacting with people and people interacting with nature. You have to deal with an abusive boss? That’s a stressful situation. You’ve got termites in your home? That’s another stressful situation.
Stress even comes from your “inner demons,” such as your expectations of yourself, of other people and of life itself, and the conflict between your expectations and in your reality. Continue reading »
