Medication errors alone cause 7,000 deaths a year…or the equivalent of roughly 16 passenger-filled jumbo jet crashes. What contributes to this number of deaths from medication errors? Errors can occur from paper-based scripts, illegible handwriting, misinterpretation of medication dosage, and undetected drug interactions. If this sounds like yet another broken aspect of health care in the U.S. there is a cure to minimize errors just waiting to be swallowed, and far from being bitter it’s free.
NEPSI (National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative) is a consortium of organizations working to prevent medication errors using information technology available today. NEPSI stakeholders include Allscripts LLC, Microsoft Corp., Dell Inc., Fujitsu Computers of America, Cisco Systems Inc., Walters-Kluwer Health Inc., Google, and SureScripts. Together they combined component electronic health care technology and developed an electronic prescribing system used with an Internet connection. And better yet, the service is offered free to any physician in America who wants to participate in the five-year project. Continue reading »

The Pritikin Approach was originally developed in the mid 1970’s by Nathan Pritikin. It was originally used to help the lowering of cholesterol and utilized by diabetics to regulate their blood sugar without the use of insulin. After it was found to also cause weight loss, a new breed of diet followers were born.
Mr. Pritikin shared his message through several books and at his Pritikin Longevity Centers where an estimated 70,000 people have spent time at since 1976. His son Robert has now taken on leading those towards the future of the method behind this timeless diet. He has put his own spin on the “not vegetarian but almost” concept. This article will examine the basis of The Pritikin Approach and the pros and cons of the diet with information from the newest book published in the popular series entitled “The Pritikin Principle”.

Ski season always brings with it the excitement of fresh powder and the lingering question, “Is my equipment up to the task?” If you bought your skis when Clinton was in office, your question is a legitimate one. Ski technology has improved over the years with innovative designs and lighter components, especially for women.
If you’re a woman skier, you’ll find skis designed with your needs in mind. Gone are the days of adding pink to men’s skis and calling them women’s skis. Today’s women’s skis take into account a woman’s lower center of gravity. You’ll find bindings mounted further forward on the skis. This allows you to be centered on the skis rather than shifting your weight toward the tails where you become unbalanced and the skis unstable. Continue reading »

An easy way of increasing exercise is to walk more and counting the number of steps you walk each day has become a popular activity. We’re frequently told that walking 10,000 steps a day is recommended, but in order to count how far you walk, you need to use a pedometer or step-o-meter.
I think these gadgets are great and they’ve certainly proved helpful for me, as it’s hard to know exactly how far you walk without them. But the one I’m currently using seems to be a bit haphazard with its counting methods, often seizing up and stopping completely, or offering counts which don’t seem to quite add up (e.g. far less steps on the return part of a walk, yet I’ve covered the same distance).

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are crucial to good health and a long life. They can help to reduce the negative effects of disease and can offer protection against certain diseases.
What are Omega 3 fatty acids? Essentially, Omega 3 must be obtained from the diet for a healthy life. Specifically, Omega 3 is a group of fatty acids that are polyunsaturated. Most of us associate the month of March with St. Patrick’s Day, which is celebrated on March 17th. We envision the Lucky Charms Leprechaun, four leaf clovers and a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. We dress in our greenest apparel and hope for the luck of the Irish. But March is also Nutrition Month and besides being the first day of Spring, March 20th is also Meatout Day. On that day meat eaters can take the opportunity to see what it’s like to be a vegetarian.
With March being Nutrition Month, it is the perfect time to go vegetarian since many people consider a vegetarian diet to be more healthy.
