With the arrival of spring comes nature’s abundance; budding trees, colorful flowers and blooms galore. Such profusion also means, for many, an extended period of unpleasant sneezing, wheezing and watery eyes while the world of nature gracefully blossoms. Some are left to gaze upon spring’s arrival through windows to avoid the plague of pollen while others freely frolic amidst the sneeze-producing dust bowls. But regardless of your allergy susceptibility, it’s wise to “decontaminate” your indoor environment in order to maintain optimum seasonal health.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (www.niaid.nih.gov) reports more than 50 million Americans suffer from allergic diseases with chronic sinusitis as the most commonly reported chronic disease affecting nearly 32 million people. As of 2002, 18.2 million American adults and 7.5 American children were diagnosed with hay fever. Continue reading »

Olive oil always occupied a special place in my grandmother’s home. Before she married and came to America, my grandmother had been a cook in the household of a family of Italian nobles in her native Sicily. She kept most everything near at hand, except for the olive oil and wine. I often wondered why the giant cans of olive oil were kept apart from the host of other cooking condiments and products she used in her household.
Both these items were stored in the cellar until she could use them. When it was time to bring them to the kitchen, she placed the olive oil at the bottom of a cupboard in the pantry where it was cool and dark. There was only one grade of olive oil. Most olive oil had the same wonderful taste whether you used it to fry an egg with garlic or to sauté a wide array of herbs, vegetables, and meats. Both my grandparents would take weekly shopping trips by train to New York City’s Little Italy to buy products they could not obtain in their hometown markets. Continue reading »

Beginning in 2006, Medicare beneficiaries had the option of enrolling in Medicare Part D, a program designed to provide prescription drug coverage to individuals with Medicare. While Medicare Part D is a progressive program and helpful to Medicare beneficiaries, it also creates a host of new issues for beneficiaries to consider when choosing a plan. Below is some basic information that should be considered when selecting a Medicare Part D plan.
The Basics
Medicare Part D is a prescription drug benefit plan that was established by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 and went into effect in January, 2006. Although this program was established by Medicare, it is not an automatic addition to traditional Medicare coverage. Continue reading »

Indigenous communities treat a girl’s first menstruation as a joyous occasion to observe with great festivity. Your daughter would probably find such exuberance to be most embarrassing in this day and age, but treating it as a minimal parenting obligation of little consequence, is unwise as well.
Many health issues of adolescence and of the early adult years can be traced to poor management or even to neglect at menarche. All kids do not develop at the same pace, and boys typically reach puberty a good 5 years later than girls. It is healthy, in some respects, for kids to grow up together regardless of gender, but parenting should account for the biological fact that girls will become women while male siblings are still immature. Further, some girls will achieve menarche as early as at 11 years, while others have to wait for about 2 more years to come of reproductive age. Continue reading »

Medicare Part D is a federal program partnered with private companies that began providing prescription drug cost assistance to senior citizens and people with disabilities that started January 2006. One year later it is estimated that 39 million Americans utilize the prescription drug program as announced by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt. Understanding the plans and finding your way though the quagmire of uncertainties boils down to understanding what the program entails and answering a few simple questions. Continue reading »

We all get stressed occasionally, but some of us manage to deal with it better than others. It can occur for lots of different reasons – common triggers include work pressures, relationships, family problems and financial reasons. Sadly, if it isn’t dealt with it can have serious effects on our physical, mental and emotional health, as well as lead to other conditions such as high blood pressure, peptic ulcers and depression.
Although the situation looks simple to healthy individuals, often stress sufferers are the last to realise how unwell and run-down they’re feeling, and that there’s a need to make changes. Some of the warning signs and symptoms include: Continue reading »

In recent years, gastric bypass surgery has become a more accepted method of treating obesity. While it may seem an easy fix, this surgery can be dangerous and may have complications. How do you know if it is the right decision for you? You need to be sure that you are well-informed before jumping into a major surgery such as gastric bypass.
Gastric bypass surgery is basically designed to make the stomach much smaller and to bypass a portion of the small intestine. The actual procedure is to staple the stomach to form only a small pouch at the top. This reduced stomach is then connected to the small intestine, but in the middle of the small intestine, allowing any ingested food to bypass the majority of the stomach and half of the small intestine, where many nutrients (and calories) would normally be absorbed.
If this sounds drastic, that’s because it is. Gastric bypass surgery is not for the faint of heart. It is usually only recommended in extreme cases of obesity, although ultimately it has become more of a cure-all for those suffering from overweight. It is always best to try natural weight loss methods first, including exercise and proper diet. Continue reading »
